Purpose and Objectives:
The main objective and general idea is to promote and share general knowledge, indigenous knowledge and experiences with other Arctic indigenous peoples in the Barents region and develop and update best practices and capacities built in Sámi Education Institute with years of Arctic Indigenous cooperation. The goal is also by networking, education and development efforts with indigenous livelihoods, such as reindeer herding and other professions related, to assist in building greater capacity in the Arctic indigenous education.

Building capacity and competence for indigenous students and teachers, enabling them to use virtual school technics and distance learning methods in their studies and their work. Multidisciplinary teaching is utilized in many ways, for example, unbiased, multidisciplinary and collaborative ways. Distance learning support services enable the teacher to focus on teaching only. Distance learning is of special importance for maintaining and revitalizing endangered indigenous and minority languages.    
Target groups:
Indigenous groups practicing traditional livelihoods, struggling with survival of culture and language. Barents region; Sápmi area in the Nordic State, Russian Karelia, Nenets area, Komi area, Murmansk area.      
Planned activities:
Carrying out international Arctic education modules for the benefit of cross-border cooperation in the Arctic region would be the practical goal in the project. Such education modules can contain practical hands-on-training, workshops, seminars, expert lectures, breakout sessions, dialogue with students and experts, dialogue with arctic researchers. Measures include carrying out virtual school teaching experiments for target groups struggling with survival of their languages.  
1) Introduction to Sámi Reindeer Herding, 7 days: 1 module, fall 2018
Objectives:
The main objective is to strengthen sustainable reindeer husbandry or similar hunting cultures respectively, their image and its subsidiary livelihoods in the target regions. The specific target group are the Arctic indigenous peoples.
Contents:
- introduction to self-supervision plans of the reindeer abattoirs
- practical reindeer slaughtering and processing in the processing plants
- introduction to Sámi reindeer herding in Lapland
- introduction to reindeer tourism
- a specified section on entrepreneurship
- 10 – 12 students max

2) Innovative use of virtual teaching and learning technologies, 5 days: fall 2018 two modules (one in Inari, one in St. Petersburg)
Backround:
Sámi Education Institute is a foregoer in virtual teaching and distance learning in Finland. The primary functions and purpose of the virtual school is to provide and organize distance learning and virtual teaching for indigenous language studies. International study modules and services have been organized and carried out for Swedish and Norwegian vocational schools. Such modules can be offered for indigenous language studies in Russia through co-operation with partner schools in Russia. The modules can be of crucial importance revitalizing the small and endangered languages in Russia. For example, plans have been made to establish an international project or as part of a larger project (as a module) to provide ABC-training and language teaching by the Virtual School for teachers in the Herzen University in St. Petersburg (also known as Institute of the Peoples of the North).

Possible contents:
- (Prior to starting the module) support staff will familiarize students with the tools and systems required for distance education
- ABC training in distance education
- language teaching takes place in real time and interactively in digital learning environments
- MS Office Training 
- Google cloud services
- 365 trainings
- Blog and training sessions  

Management and Financing:
Sámi Education Institute is the leading partner of the the project. The project has received 53 000 € from Foreign affairs, Sweden for carrying out the project between September 1 – December 31, 2018.
